Globalization- a key to growth, lowers poverty & destroys caste barriers;
India- potential to emerge as a leader in the new world economic order: Prof Kishore Mahbubani at PBD

Globalization creates both challenges and opportunities said Mr Sam Pitroda, Advisor to Prime Minister of India at the PBD oration, held at the 10th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas  in Jaipur. The event has been jointly organized by Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (Government of India), Government of Rajasthan and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), from 7-9 January 2012 at Jaipur. He added that the global economy is evolving at a fast pace with the new world order shifting from unipolar to multipolar. Information technology has increased the connectivity resulting in shrinking of the world into a global village.

In his PBD Oration, Prof Kishore Mahbubani, Dean & Professor, Practice of Public Policy, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore said that it is an opportune moment for India to play a more proactive role at the world stage for which India should champion the cause of globalization. Traditionally the West has been the custodian of globalization. However given the changing economic order and also the fact that India and China have been the major beneficiaries of globalization, these countries should become the new custodians. He suggested India to be more vigilant against the world receding into protectionism, which could reverse the trend of globalization.

He admired the resilience shown by the 30 million Indians in succeeding against all odds in over 130 countries in the world. This also highlights the grit, determination and competitive spirit of the Indian community overseas, he added.

Complimenting the catalytic role played by the diaspora in the liberalization of Indian economy, he emphasized on sustained advocacy by the diaspora with political class, policy makers and media for further liberalisation of the economy.  He urged the diaspora to create a constituency of globalization, foster a community of globalisers and help manage the challenges of globalization.
